The latest research from King’s College London indicates that birth rates in the UK are unlikely to increase despite the initial speculation of a post-pandemic baby boom. The study drew from a group of women who had previously accessed Tommy’s Planning for Pregnancy tool, with around half of the participants indicating that COVID-19 had changed their pregnancy plans. Specifically, 72% of women had decided to postpone pregnancy while only 28% brought their plans forward, with 92% still wanting to become pregnant eventually. The reasons for postponing pregnancy included fears over the virus’s impact on pregnant women and babies, changes to antenatal care, and concerns over pressure on the NHS. The research highlights the need for better plans to support growing families in the future and ensure safe access to services and information during pandemics. The Tommy’s Planning for Pregnancy tool provides information to support those preparing for pregnancy.
